Rum Distillery

  • Client: Ninefold Distillery
  • Project Size: Site area 0.38 hectares
  • Location: Dalton, Lockerbie, Dumfries & Galloway
  • Status: Complete

Existing farm buildings have been substantially altered and refurbished to provide a home for the first and only rum distillery in the south of Scotland - Ninefold Rum. A former steading was stripped bare, leaving only the existing walls, before being rebuilt with a new roof, floor and internal structure. This formed the distillery itself, with a stone barn being altered and upgraded to form the new bond warehouse.

The building has been designed to allow future expansion as the new business grows, as well as typical considerations of an ATEX standard electrical installation and industrial specification. Due to the rural location, the building and process plant services proved an interesting challenge.

Our client was keen to retain the charm of the existing buildings and estate farm; external alterations were kept in character and historic stonework bearing the family coat of arms was incorporated into the design.
